Choosing the right crate for your dog is important. To help you get started, we have put together some general guidelines. Keep in mind these are general guidelines, and the specific needs of your dog should be considered.
Length
The kennel should be long enough for your dog to comfortably stretch out in a lying position without their paws or nose touching the sides of the crate. As a rough guideline, a crate for a 40 pound dog should be at least 36 to 42 inches and a crate for an 80 pound dog should be at least 42 to 48 inches in length.
Height
The crate should be tall enough for your dog to stand up without hunching over. A suitable height for a 40 pound is typically between 24 and 28 inches while a suitable height for an 80 pound is typically between 28 and 36 inches.
Width
The crate should be wide enough for your dog to turn around easily. For a 40 pound dog, this generally requires 24 for 30 inches while an 80 pound dog likely requires 28 to 36 inches.
Other Requirements
Your crate should also have good ventilation and be constructed from safe, sturdy materials. Be mindful of how the crate opens and closes. Be mindful that some dogs are gifted escae artists. You will want to ensure your dog cannot open the latching mechanism on their own.
Also, be sure to provide your dog with appropriate bedding and toys to make it a comfortable and secure space for them.
Your Dog’s Needs
Some dogs may feel more comfortable in a slightly larger crate, while others may be fine with these dimensions. Regardless of the crate you choose, proper crate training is essential to ensure your dog associates the crate with positive experiences and does not feel stressed. If you have concerns about crate training or selecting the right size crate for your dog, it is always a good idea to consult with a veterinarian or a professional dog trainer you know and trust.
